Inside the APA: Things You Didn’t Know Were on the APA Website

Every now and then the administrative office receives a suggestion for something to add to the APA website. Surprisingly often, the suggested item is already on the website. The website is large. There are hundreds of pages that staff and governance have created and curated. Making it easy to find and navigate to every page within the site is challenging, to say the least. With this in mind, I wanted to share a few of the resources that are available on the APA website that you might not be aware of.

Getting onto the Meeting Program

Most are aware that each division of the APA offers an opportunity for members to submit their papers or posters to be considered for presentation at the corresponding divisional meeting. Many are not aware that there are other paths to getting onto the program.

Suggestions for the Invited Portion of the Program

The divisions offer ways to suggest sessions for the invited portion of the divisional program. Each is different, and the lead time required for planning purposes must be taken into consideration. More information is available on this form.

The Affiliated Group Program

Many of the groups and societies that hold their meetings at APA meetings accept submitted papers for presentation at their sessions. These sessions are fully organized by the individual societies, not by the APA. In order to find out if any of these groups have calls for papers, you can check the calls for papers on the APA website. If the group has submitted a call for papers to us, this is where you will find it. You can also find the list of affiliated groups on the site.

APA Lectures and Addresses

The APA website houses archives of the following divisional and prize lectures. Most require APA membership to access, and all of these can be found in the Proceedings and Addresses of the APA, which is also available on the website.

Presidential Addresses

At every divisional meeting of the APA, the president of that division delivers the presidential address. Currently, the addresses are available in PDF format. Over the coming months, audio recordings will also become available for recent lectures. Note: access to presidential addresses from 2003 and later is limited to APA members.

John Dewey Lectures

Every year, each divisional meeting of the APA hosts a Dewey Lecture from a prominent, senior (typically retired) philosopher. These autobiographical lectures are on the website and provide insight into the lives and careers of some of the most beloved and influential philosophers in the profession. Note: access to Dewey Lectures is limited to APA members.

Patrick Romanell Lectures

The Patrick Romanell Lecture is presented annually at a divisional meeting of the APA on the topic of philosophical naturalism. Lectures dating back to 2004 are available to APA members on the website.

De Gruyter Kant Lecture Series

The de Gruyter Kant Lecture was held annually at an APA meeting from 2014 through 2024. Lectures are available to APA members in PDF format on the website.

Ernest Sosa Prize Lectures

The Ernest Sosa Prize, recently created to recognize significant achievement in the area of epistemology, is awarded biennially. Lectures are available to APA members in PDF format on the website.

APA Meeting Programs

The APA website hosts an archive of divisional meeting programs in PDF format. APA membership is not required to access these.

Calls for Papers

The APA posts calls for papers submitted via the online form on the website. If you notice something missing, please submit a form!

Calendar and Events

The website has a page for philosophy-related events that allows you to filter by category and view as either a list or a calendar page. The event categories include APA Live, APA notices, divisional meetings, conferences and seminars, and prize deadlines. If you use an RSS reader, you can get the RSS feed for events on this page as well.

Your Transactions

Have you ever wondered if you paid your dues, registered for a meeting, or wanted a receipt for a past transaction? If you are an APA member, you can access your past transactions when logged into the website via your member profile. You can also navigate to this page by clicking “Manage Profile” in the box labeled “My Profile,” and then clicking “Invoices.” Meeting registrations are just next to transactions on this page. Just click on “Event Registrations” to access them.

Resources

There are a large number of resources of various types available on the APA website. One of the best ways to find resources is to use the site search feature, but you can also browse the Resources menu. Here you’ll find APA resources and collections, diversity resources, webinars, APA policies, resources for graduate students, events, calls for papers, links to resources, and much more.

Committees

Much of the work of the association happens in APA committees. The APA has six standing committees defined by the association bylaws and 14 special committees established by the board of officers. Visit a committee’s web page to see their charge, what they have been working on, and who is on the committee. Eight committees also produce APA Studies, which include both philosophical scholarship and discussion on the area in which the committee operates. APA membership is not required to access APA Studies.
