Student Reflection Snapshot: Kate Barnes

This series of Student Reflections is based on interviews conducted by Elyse Purcell and Sarah Horne during the APA’s 2019 Central Division Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Kate Barnes is currently an undergraduate Philosophy and Computer Science dual major at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

Why did you choose to major in philosophy?

I was exposed to both of my primary areas of study (Philosophy and Computer Science) in college, and felt immediately drawn to them. Philosophy excited me, I found it study, and noticed I had an aptitude for it. I would proudly find myself correctly guessing what point the author was going to make before they made it. Friends and strangers alike said the discipline “made sense for me.”

What do you like most (or dislike) about your school’s philosophy program?

The Philosophy program at my school focuses primarily on Continental Philosophy, which I understand is unusual. I like this more artistic/literary side of Philosophy, and love all the professors here. Our classes are discussion-based and not to strictly run. We can talk about the many associations that the readings brought to mind. The department does focus on the “LOVE of wisdom.” I appreciate this.

Are you considering pursuing a professional career in philosophy or something philosophy related?

Maybe. At the moment, I want to pursue a variety of different experiences.

What has been your favorite philosophy class so far?

My favorite philosophy class so far was Africana Philosophy.

What did you enjoy most about the APA Central Division Conference?

I enjoyed connecting with all the wonderful people and getting a sense of what the professional Philosophical milieu of today is really like.
