Modern Day Philosophers: Philosophy Outside Academia

Hello there, whoever you are. I am Daniel Lobell, a stand-up comedian and host of the podcast, Modern Day Philosophers.

I realized that I had always regretted not paying more attention in school, especially to the subject of philosophy. And so, I decided it was time to give it a go on my own. After some struggle trying to understand what I was reading, I knew I needed help. I realized that my friends, stand up comedians, would make great study partners. I’ve often heard us referred to as the philosophers of our day which I figured sounded like a good enough excuse to approach them about it.

Once I had come that far the next logical step for me was to record the sessions and it hit me that a podcast would be the perfect platform to broadcast our study sessions and share them with the world. I enlisted the help of my friend back in NYC, Alex Fossella (who in addition to being a very funny comic was also a philosophy major in college) to pick out what to study with whom every week. Comedians have often been called Modern Day Philosophers and with that in mind I set out to see if it was true by discussing the ideas of some of history’s most famous philosophers with my comedian friends. And so, “Modern Day Philosophers” was born.

This show will give you some basic philosophy knowledge but it really shines in that it’s a great tool to gain a deeper understanding of the comedians through bouncing these great philosophical concepts and ideas off of them.

I love ideas. Funny ideas, smart ideas, perception-altering ideas and considering how many great ideas the great philosophers spent years coming up with and writing down, I think it’s great to be able to unpack them and make them relevant to our lives today. Also, it’s fun to joke about a lot of them so there is that.

Please tune in to hear unique interviews and perspectives from some of the worlds greatest comedic minds (and mine too). Past guests include Bill Burr, Maria Bamford, Reggie Watts, Gad Elmaleh, Carl Reiner, Fred Armisen, Janeane Garofalo, Lewis Black, Marc Maron, Colin Quinn and so many more.
