IBM Lotus Notes, originally known simply as "Notes," has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1989. It was created by Ray Ozzie and developed by Iris Associates, a small software company. In 1995, IBM acquired Lotus Development Corporation and with it, the Notes software. Notes revolutionized the way organizations managed their communication and collaboration processes. It introduced the concept of integrated email, calendar, and contacts, making it one of the first comprehensive groupware applications. Its unique feature was the replication technology, allowing users to work offline and synchronize data when connected to a network, a groundbreaking capability at the time. Throughout its history, Lotus Notes went through numerous versions and updates, gaining popularity primarily in the corporate world. It was a cornerstone of IBM's collaboration solutions, empowering businesses to create custom applications, workflows, and databases. However, in the late 2000s and 2010s, the rise of cloud-based collaboration tools and the changing landscape of enterprise software posed challenges to Notes' dominance. IBM eventually rebranded it as "IBM Notes" and "IBM Domino." By 2018, IBM sold its collaboration software portfolio, including Notes and Domino, to HCL Technologies, an IT services company based in India. HCL continued to develop and support the software under the HCL Notes and HCL Domino names. Lotus Notes remains a symbol of innovation in the history of workplace collaboration software, even as it has evolved and adapted to the changing technology landscape over the years.
