APA Graduate Student Council: Appointments and Elections

The American Philosophical Association has made four new appointments to the Graduate Student Council (GSC). Congratulations to the new appointees, who will begin their two-year terms on July 1, 2021:

  • Sophie Arase (Florida State University)
  • Sean Costello (University of Michigan)
  • Laura Gurskey (University of Southern California)
  • Genae Matthews (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

The GSC serves as a liaison between the graduate students in the discipline of philosophy and the APA, reporting to the board on issues of interest, concern, and relevance to philosophy graduate students. The GSC chair is a voting member of the APA board of officers. The GSC advises the board on how to best serve and support graduate students, occasionally undertaking projects at the board’s request. Additionally, the council regularly undertakes projects of its own that further its goals.

The GSC is made up of twelve philosophy graduate students. Eight of the twelve members of the GSC are appointed by a selection committee. Four of the twelve members of the GSC are elected by student members of the APA.

Nominations are now open for two elected seats on the GSC. All student members who are current graduate students in a philosophy program are eligible to run for a seat on the GSC. Candidates interested in running for seats on the GSC must submit a brief CV, a letter from their institution certifying their graduate student status, and a candidate statement. The final group of candidates to stand for election will be selected from among the pool of nominees by the current members of the GSC.

The deadline to submit nominations is Sunday, February 14. The deadline for nominees to accept a nomination is Tuesday, February 16.

If you or someone you know would make a great member of the GSC, submit a nomination today! Only student members of the APA may submit or accept nominations.

We look forward to receiving your nominations!
