The American Philosophical Association is pleased to announce that Dr. Gualtiero Piccinini (University of Missouri–St. Louis) has been selected by the APA committee on philosophy and computers as the winner of the 2018 Barwise Prize.
The Barwise Prize is awarded for significant and sustained contributions to areas relevant to philosophy and computing. The prize serves to credit those within the profession of philosophy for their lifelong efforts in this area. The Barwise Prize winner receives a plaque, and will offer a keynote talk at a computing and philosophy conference as well as a talk at one of the APA divisional meetings.
Marcello Guarini, chair of the APA committee on philosophy and computers, said, “Professor Piccinini’s mechanistic account of physical computation and his related work on the theory of cognition has deepened our understanding of physical computation, information processing, computational approaches to cognition, and the integration of psychology and neuroscience.”
Piccinini is professor of philosophy and associate director of the Center for Neurodynamics at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003. His research specialties include philosophy of computation, mind, psychology, and neuroscience.
