Humans versus Nature

From the call of the mountains to the preservation of wilderness, we wish to celebrate and protect nature as something precious. But what separates humanity and its actions from nature remains a mystery. Are humans a malevolent force destroying the purity of the natural world? Or are we part of nature ourselves and necessarily at one with it?

In this video from the Institute of Art and Ideas, BBC documentarian and explorer Bruce Parry, politician and philosopher Rupert Read, and author of What is Nature? Kate Soper debate our place in the world.

This video was produced by The Institute of Art and Ideas and is republished here with permission. It was filmed at HowTheLightGetsIn 2016, along with over 200 other debates and talks. Their new podcast, Philosophy for our times, is available here.
