The American Philosophical Association is pleased to announce that Professor David Christensen (Brown University) will deliver the 2017–2018 Sanders Lecture at the 2018 Eastern Division meeting in Savannah, GA.
The Sanders Lecture was established in 2013 to honor a distinguished scholar in philosophy of mind, metaphysics, or epistemology who engages the analytic tradition. It is generously funded by the Marc Sanders Foundation. The lecture, which includes a $3,500 monetary award plus travel costs not to exceed $1,500, is offered every year at an APA divisional meeting on a rotating basis.
Christensen received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1987 and taught for 20 years at the University of Vermont before coming to Brown University in 2007. His main research interests are in epistemology, formal and informal. His book, Putting Logic in its Place, investigates the role of logic in constraining rational beliefs and degrees of confidence. He has also written several papers on this topic and others. Christensen is currently working on questions about how our theory of rational belief should in general accommodate one’s doubts about one’s own cognitive reliability.
The chair of the selection committee said, “Over the past 30 years, David Christensen has done some of the most creative, original, and influential work in epistemology. His writings have broken new ground, opening new topics for exploration, and set the agenda for others. We are delighted that he will give the 2017–2018 Sanders Lecture at the Eastern APA.”
