The Story of Romance

From love at first sight to falling head over heels, it seems love isn’t something we do but something that happens to us. Yet relationship experts say successful relationships are built on hard work. Can we construct the romantic narrative? Would power over love’s story improve the experience? Or is love a wild adventure best left untamed?

In this week’s video from the Institute of Art and Ideas, philosopher Shahidha Bari joins Chris Sherwood, CEO of Relate, the UK’s largest relationship counseling service, and artist Martha Fiennes to imagine new narratives for love.

This video was produced by The Institute of Art and Ideas with support from eHarmony UK and is republished here with permission.  It was filmed at ‘The Greatest Adventure’, a weekend retreat on the philosophy of love in May 2017. Their new podcast, Philosophy for our times, is available here.
