“My body, my choice” has been the rallying cry for social justice movements around the world, since in an equitable and just world we are all surely all have sovereignty of our own bodies. Yet we cannot dispose of it as we please, certain intoxicants are outlawed, and selling our body for sexual pleasure or organ donation is restricted. Is our body strangely not our own after all?  Should we insist on our rights and freedom or do we need to be protected from ourselves?

In this new debate from the Institute of Art and Ideas, radical bioethicist John Harris, Belle de Jour blogger Brooke Magnanti, and Anne Phillips, author ofOur Bodies, Whose Property? consider bodily autonomy and ownership (Simon Glendinning hosts).

This video was produced by The Institute of Art and Ideas and is republished here with permission.  It was filmed at HowTheLightGetsIn 2016 alongside 200 other debates and talks, all available for free at IAI TV. Their new podcast, Philosophy for our times, is available here.
